Create or Confirm Your Mission

Mission

Your mission represents the core purpose of the organization, beyond making money, which for a profit-seeking enterprise is a given. The mission articulates your reason for being and reflects your team’s motivation for engaging in the organization’s work each and every day. In the book, Sydney tells Rory that “Purpose is at the heart of the strategy wheel…” and when you look at the Roadmap Strategy diagram you see that is exactly the case.

Before you develop a compelling strategy you must connect or re-connect to your core purpose; why you exist as an organization. That exercise will create context for strategy setting, ensuring the path you choose will be one destined to lead you ever closer to achieving your ultimate purpose as an organization.

In addition to providing context for strategic planning and acting as a beacon for your work, the mission statement provides a powerful tool for your leadership team when explaining the relevance of strategic decisions by demonstrating a linkage back to the mission.
